Who's Status Counts

I know this is a stupid and newbie question but I need clarification.

Yes, I searched but couldn't find a post or comment.

HH tells me, and from what I have always understood, status benefits and points are given to the person staying and not to the person who's account the points came from. Correct?

If so than why would a none status person staying on a gold status person points, receive gold benefits and bonus points? Simple mistake?
