Last Friday, I checked into a HGI which I booked on a prepaid rate. The first thing I noticed when I entered my room was the odor of cigarette smoke, despite the fact the property is supposed to be non-smoking. It was not just a faint odor like what you would find in an older property that used to have smoking rooms. The odor was very strong as if the previous guest had smoked in the room. Not the biggest deal in the world to me, but mom was staying with me as she was swinging through the area as well, and she has very bad allergies and does deal well with things like cigarette smoke.
After we looked around the room some more, we noticed crumbs here and there so I informed the front desk who said they would have housekeeping try to take care of the crumbs and try to reduce the odor. Though it wasn't my desired resolution, we were okay with it and went meet friends for dinner. Fast forward 3.5 hours, we got back to the room and nothing had been done. To make matters worse, we noticed several of these little critters around the room:

That was the final straw for us. We imediately packed up and headed down to check out. To her credit, the front desk clerk was apologetic and offered to discount our rate by 50% and move us to the another room. But we had enough, and decided to head to a Marriott a few minutes away.
I probably should have prefaced this by saying I am not whiner, and it's only the second time in 400+ nights in hotels since 2009 I've checked out early due to issues with the property. The first instance was when I checked in to find a vomit crusted toilet at the Las Vegas Candlewood. I don't want compensation. I just want a refund of my prepaid rate, which I think is the fair and equitable solution in this situation.
My initial talks with the hotel manager have not been promising. So I was wondering if anyone on this board has any sage advice on how to handle sitatuation or if there any other avenues I should pursue for a refund.
Btw, this is my first FT rant/complaint... I guess this makes me a full fledge member now;)
