No show on reservation, charged for full 4 night stay. Is this normal?

Somehow or other I had two reservations. I cancelled one and missed the other. Now I find out I was charged for all 4 nights? Is this usual practice? I know other hotels will just charge for the 1st night of the reservation and cancel for no shows. Is there any recourse? Really don't feel like I should be responsible for all 4 nights
