I'm about 6000 points shy (will have by the end of November for an April booking) of booking a stay on points. Marriott allows me to book even if I'm short the required points, and will charge my credit card the cost of the missing points if I don't have them in place before I travel. Hilton requires that the points are in place at the time of booking or they charge the difference right then and there.
But then again given that Hilton's web site is terrible (being challeneged to reenter my user ID and password on four screens just to book a room!), it doesn't surprise me that they can't put the fixes in place to offer this convenience.
