Beware when storing luggage at New York Hilton Midtown

I recently stayed 2 weeks at the Hilton New York Midtown (on Sixth ave). My flight back to London was at 9pm. I was only given a late check out until 2pm despite the hotel having rooms available (but that's another story). The front desk, of course, told me that I could store my luggage before I had to leave forf the airport.

At 2pm, I asked for a bellman to come help with my luggage. The bellman asked if I needed a taxi, to which I replied, I am actually leaving at 9pm so not now. He then replied, so you need to store your luggage, and said he could save me some time by writing me the ticket there and storing it. He handed me the ticket, and I went down to the lobby to check out.

After hanging out at MoMA for a few hours (right across the street, the best thing about this hotel), I returned to pick up my luggage. To my shock, they asked for $14 cash ($3.50/piece). Every hotel I have ever stayed at have offered to store luggage for free in a situation like this. Furthermore, I was *never* told about the fee. It was on the ticket that the bellman wrote to me in small print, but who reads the luggage ticket that they give you?? He never mentioned the fee, the front desk never mentioned the fee.

Being in a hurry, I paid, but I find it insulting to have to pay to store my luggage for a few hours after spending thousands of dollars for a 14 night stay.

So please be aware if you stay at this Hilton that you will be charged for storing luggage. Although its not a big charge in the big scheme of things, I do think it is going to impact my choice of hotel in the future. It's a pity, because the hotel is in a good location with a nice gym (although the wifi was unbearably slow).
