I've been staying on and off at the Hilton Nottingham for the past year or so for work - have done probably 25 nights there over that period. I'm a Hilton Diamond, and have not once had an upgrade of my room.
Last time I was there, I had booked into a twin room, because that's what my corporate travel agent booked on the corporate rate. I asked if I could please have a double instead, the lady on reception said that I can only stay in the room that's booked. I pointed out that as a Diamond member I should be entitled to "space available" upgrades to other rooms, and even to suites, but she said that there isn't space available for people on corporate rates. The corporate rate was £70 per night, the published rate I could buy online (I went to my room and checked) for the same room for that night was £72, so I paid £2 less than a walk-in would.
Does this seem reasonable or should the hotel be "upgrading" as a matter of course for a Diamond? I have another stay there next week, and again I'm in a twin room. I'd prefer to sleep on a double bed than a single, and there are certainly double rooms available - is it unreasonable for me to ask for an "upgrade" of this sort? I mean, it's not like I'm asking for a suite!!
Perhaps my approach is wrong? Should I be more aggressive? Less aggressive? Ask for the manager? (One thing I'd like to do is just book on the Website and book the double room straight away, but I can't do that by corporate policy).
Cheers,
-simon
