Diamond through Visa before through Nights

I usually don't qualify by using my credit card for $40,000 per year. I usually make it the hard way by staying nights. I have the opportunity to stay at a very nice non Hilton hotel for my stays through the end of the year. If I do that, how will I know when I pass the $40K threshold and when do my diamond credentials for 2015 come in?
